Give thanks for your teeth; they work hard on Thanksgiving!

We hope having healthy teeth and gums are something you can be grateful for this Thanksgiving season! As we take time to contemplate all that we are grateful for…family, friends, shelter, food…we should also consider our oral health. To help keep your celebrations as joyful as possible we’ve put together a few dental tips that will keep your smile healthy.

Eat healthy foods. Incorporate healthy foods into snack options for your gatherings. Consuming healthy protein-rich snacks will keep you from indulging in too many unwanted temptations. Involve children in the preparation of the healthy options, as this will likely get them excited about nutritious food choices and keep their little hands busy. Savory choices may include cheese, vegetables, meats and creative salads.

Be aware of the sugars and starches. From pumpkin pie and chocolate cake to cranberry sauce or cornbread, all these foods feed the bacteria in your mouth that can cause cavities. Try to limit foods to mealtime and don’t continually snack.

Drink water. Remember to stay hydrated before, during, and after your Thanksgiving feast. Water also helps rinse away food particles that stick to the teeth and lowers the acidic buildup that creates cavities. While alcohol consumption is often higher during gatherings, you want to remember to alternate drinks with water. Water is a better choice than sodas and juice when trying to maintain the health of your teeth.

Set a mealtime. During Thanksgiving gatherings, we tend to graze on food all afternoon and evening. Try to keep eating to mealtimes, so your bacteria don’t have a food source all day.

Caring for your teeth during traveling. Many people travel for the holiday. Don’t neglect your routine. Be sure to pack everyone’s toothbrush and interdental cleaning device for between the teeth. The TePe EasyPick is an excellent on the go option.

Wishing everyone a very festive Thanksgiving Holiday in whatever capacity that may be this year!
